Gangtok, May 5: The fourth Gram Shree Mela of Self Help Groups organised by Sikkim Rural Development Agency, RMDD concluded today. The mela was inaugurated on 23rd April 2012 at Old Children Park. The 13 days mela organised to promote rural artisians saw display and sale of rural products of more then 40 SHG’s from all round the state with total sale of about five lakhs rupees.
Secretary, RMDD, AK Ganeriwala accompanied by Project Director, SRDA, LP Chettri and departmental officials visited the mela, congratulated the participants and distributed certificates to the participants on the final day of the mela.

The Governor of Assam J. B. Patnaik, Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region and Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Chairman of North Eastern Council (NEC), Paban Singh Ghatowar and Health Minister of Assam Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma were also present on the occasion.
The Prime Minister was also briefed about the Revitalization Project Phase-IV (RPP-IV) for up-gradation of Dr. B. Borooah Cancer Institute to a centre of excellence at a total cost of Rs.197.49 crores. The Prime Minister expressed his happiness to inaugurate the facility and inquired about the most common type of cancer in men and women in Assam and North Eastern Region.
RPP-IV is being implemented by the NEC, DAE and the Government of Assam (GoA). In this connection, the Fourth Tripartite Agreement has been signed by NEC, DAE andGoA. The total share of NEC, DAE andGoA will be Rs.122.40 crores, Rs. 39.41 crores and Rs. 35.59 crores, respectively. This revitalization project- Phase-IV, at a total cost of Rs.197.49 crores, will be implemented from April, 2012 to 31st March, 2017 by NEC, DAE & Government ofAssam. (PIB)

Chamling also attended the final day of the 6 days Shrimad Bhagwat Gyan Ygaya which was organized in Yanggang from 13th of April, as the Chief Guest along with the area MLA and the Minister C.B Karki as the guest of honour.
During this 6days Bhagwat Gyan Yagya, Shri Rohit Raj Maharaj became the only person to have recited 108 Bhagwat katha in the history ofSikkim.
Speaking on the occasion the Chief Guest Chamling appealed to the people to replicate the words of wisdom and the spiritual knowledge imparted by the Guru Shri Rohit Raj Maharaj in their lives and live a spiritually satisfied life.
To be exultant and contented, people should always be selfless and free from the maze of desire, people who are free from greed and aspiration are the ones who are rich and prosperous in real sense, the Chief Minister added.
Further Chamling stated that the path of truth which all the religions and gurus advocate to follow is not an easy path to pursue, but the ones who take up the track of truth will be successful and thriving in the long run, to accept the truth and to follow it is the real religion and being religious in true sense.
We’ve worked earnestly and tirelessly for the people ofSikkimto make them socially, spiritually and economically potent lot and my duty and my religion is to at least fulfill their basic needs and requirements and to see them happy and fulfilled, the Chief Minister informed.
Gangtok, February 23: As per the Press communiqué received from the department of Information and Public Relation, govt. of Sikkim, the members of Catholic Churches of Sikkim have donated a sum of Rs. 165011/-( Rupees one lakh sixty five thousand and eleven) only to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the 18/9 earthquake victims of 2011. The release further adds that they have also prayed to almighty for avoidance of such calamity.

Gangtok, February 22: Rural Management and Development Department (RMDD) Secretary Anil Ganeriwala has said on Thursday that the construction of Earthquake proof Pukka houses for the 18/9 earthquake victims will complete in next 6 months. The instruction has been given by state chief minister Pawan Chamling, he added.
Due to earthquake on last September around 7972 houses were damaged across the state. Among these, 2543 houses were entirely damaged and rest 5429 houses were severely damages. 2626 houses got damaged up in East, 2958 in North, 1477 in West, while 911 houses were damaged in South districts. As per the new instructions issued by the CM, all the victims will get new earthquake proof houses before Desai festival.
Houses constructed under the scheme will be of high quality and the department will soon provide training to all engineers. Also a monitoring committee has been formed under the chairmanship of Department Secretary. Construction work will be commencing from next week at Panchayat and Block Administrative Centre (BAC) levels, after the completion of tender formalities, informed Ganeriwala.
The department will soon issue short tender notice for the construction of earthquake proof houses across the state. The tender work will be done within this week. ‘Each house is estimated to cost around Rs 4.89 lakhs. A meeting was held on February 20 in Chintan Bhawan to look upon the matter. Central Government has issued a package of 319 crores for the said project.

The Sikkim Police hopes to not only benefit from the organizational experience but also gain from the deliberations of the Congress on contemporary issues facing the police such as cyber crime, minor disputes, police reforms, ensuring integrity and technological up-gradations in police work. We hope to build up in all members of our force a scientific temperament and knowledge of the advancements in policing and use the same in the service of the society, he said.
Gangtok, February 14: The second joint Indo-Japanese workshop on landslides and disaster management is being organized in Sikkim from 14th to 18th February, 2012. The workshop organised by National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India in coordination with Land Revenue and Disaster management, Government of Sikkim, focuses on the landslide and disaster scenario, problems, mitigation and rehabilitation which will be beneficial for understanding the post earthquake situation and planning for reconstruction strategy and would also be very important for future management as well.
The workshop was inaugurated today by the Chief Secretary, Government of Sikkim Karma Gyatso at the Auditorium of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences, Tadong, Gangtok. The technical session will be held at the Forest Conference hall from tomorrow which will be deliberated by the Japanese delegation along with the officials of NIDM and followed by the site visit by the delegates.
While addressing in the inaugural session, the Chief Secretary said that the Japanese delegates hail from such a country prone to disaster of similar kind which our state is prone to and have enormous experiences in dealing with such situation. With the occurrence of disastrous events in the past, this is the right time that the Japanese experts have come to hold such a workshop in our state. This workshop will come out with important chapter preparing for the future calamities, he added.
Prof. Chandan Ghosh, Head Geo-hazard Division, NIDM in his address said that this workshop will discuss on future disasters and exchange ideas, problems. He stated that he and his team along with the Japanese delegation will be visiting landslides near Sikkim Supreme where retrofitting measures are being taken up.

The 5’ 7’’, 22 years old Sikkimese beauty queen Sonam is currently pursuing her studies at Mount Carmel College, Bangalore and has done her schooling from Paljor Namgyal Girls Senior Secondary School here.

Gangtok, February 10: Two of the three hydro power projects on the Rathong Chu that were opposed by many organisations on religious and environment grounds have been scrapped by the Sikkim government.
According to a release issued by Information and Public Relation Department today, the state government has ordered the closure of the Ting Ting HEP (99 MW) and Lethang HEP (96 MW) hydro-electric projects being undertaken in Yuksom, Tashiding Constituency in West Sikkim in public interest with immediate effect.
The state has issued a formal notification vide number 12/Home/2012 dated 08.02.2012. The decision to scrap the projects comes a month after a high-powered committee constituted by the state government submitted its report. The panel was asked to examine if the Rathong Chu projects could be implemented.
Common Platform for joint action on hydel projects in Sikkim will organise a rally at Geyzing, West Sikkim against the third project Tashiding HEP on Rathong Chu on February 13.
